Zimife Umeh graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a B.S. in Finance and a B.A. in Africana Studies in the Spring of 2009. Following graduation, she joined TNTP formerly known as The New Teacher Project as a part of the Philadelphia Teaching Fellows. She spent five years teaching high school mathematics while earning her M.Ed. in Secondary Education at Chestnut Hill College in 2011. She is currently a PhD candidate in the sociology department at Duke University where she studies criminology. Her dissertation examines the consequences of incarceration for women and families in North Carolina. Zimife’s research is funded by the Ford Foundation Predoctoral Fellowship through the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine.
