Africana Studies Major

The Africana studies major is designed for students with an interest in shaping the world. In the Africana studies major, students will understand the complexities, struggles, and successes of people of African descent that exist throughout the world.

Through an approach that combines the social sciences with those of the humanities, Africana studies critically examines the societies and peoples of Africa and African descent and their relationship to the world.

To declare an Africana Studies major, go to The Dietrich School of Arts & Sciences Undergraduate Studies webpage. Scroll down to the section titled "Declaring Your Major". Double Majors

Students are welcome to double major in Africana studies and another major and should decide on a major in their sophomore year. Double majors include economics, communications, education, English literature or writing, history, sociology, theatre arts, and urban studies.

Africana Studies/English Literature Joint Major

The joint major offers an especially coherent experience in interdisciplinary learning by bringing together Africana studies and English literature. Learn more in the joint major section.

Africana Studies Minor

minor in Africana studies will allow students to gain basic knowledge and perspectives about the people, cultures, histories, and conditions of the African Diaspora. Examples of majors interested in the Africana studies minor include economics, communications, education, English literature or writing, history, sociology, theatre arts, and urban studies. 

Certificate in Afro-Latin American & Afro-Latinx Studies

The academic requirements of the new program at the undergraduate level have three components: content courses, language study, and a digital project outcomes report. To initiate the certificate, students must complete a certificate registration form from the Department of Africana Studies. Elective courses must include at least 25% content on Afro-Latin America and/or US Afro-Latinxs to be eligible.
